Chuffed to Bits: Winning the 2024 Wahl British Barber of the Year (After Only 25 Years of Trying!)

Well, it finally happened—I’ve been named the 2024 Wahl British Barber of the Year. Only took me 25+ years of hair, hard graft, and more black coffee and chocolate than I’d care to admit to get here! But seriously, this award feels like the crown jewel in what has been quite the barbering marathon, and I’m proud to have made it across the finish line.

To say I’m over the moon would be putting it mildly. I’ve put a lot into this craft over the years—more than a few late nights, countless cups of coffee, and several questionable snacks. Not to mention enough skin fades, tapers, and “meet me at McDonald’s” haircuts (or the infamous “Edgar”) to last a lifetime. Each step has been worth it, though, and this recognition means the world to me.

Still Cutting, Still Learning

Here’s the funny part: at 46, I feel like I’m cutting better than ever. But it’s not magic—it’s a bit of stubbornness (and a few aching arms). I like to think of myself as the “friendly veteran” when younger barbers come into the shop—friendly in that I’ll share a trick or two, veteran in that I might moan about the good old days while giving them pointers on their skin fades. Let’s be honest, when the “Edgar” came around, I wasn’t sure if it was a haircut or a dare. But if the barbering industry doesn’t stand still, neither can I.

Every fade, every taper is another chance to fine-tune my craft, even if it means I’m reaching for another black coffee to get through the day. Winning this award has been a bit of a wake-up call to keep up the pace—there’s nothing like a bit of silverware to make you realise you’re not quite ready for retirement just yet.

The Future’s Bright (And Hopefully Less Wrinkly)

This award isn’t just about me (I promise). It’s about celebrating an industry that I truly believe in. The goal now? To keep this passion alive and show barbers of all ages that we’re never done learning. So, to any up-and-coming barbers out there, here’s my advice: stay sharp, stay curious, and don’t let the occasional dodgy fade get you down.

And to my clients, my supporters, and all the fellow barbers who’ve put up with my jokes over the years—thank you. Here’s to many more years of cuts, chocolate, black coffee, and a few sarcastic comments along the way.
